Tips to Beat the Heat

New York City has experienced soaring temperatures over the last month and summer is just getting started. Staying hydrated during summer heat waves is crucial for both physical and mental well-being. Here are some tips to help you beat the heat:

  1. Listen to Your Thirst: Pay attention to your body and drink when you feel thirsty. Thirst is a reliable indicator of your fluid needs.
  2. Drink Carbohydrate Water – Gatorade, Powerade, Hint Water and other sports drinks contain electrolytes and carbohydrates that replace the minerals lost when we sweat. These drinks contain sugar so if you’re diabetic, there are sugar-free or zero versions but consult your doctor before consuming these.
  3. Sip Water Throughout the Day: Don’t wait until you’re parched. Gradually consume fluids to stay hydrated. If you don’t like the taste of plain water, spruce it up by infusing it with cucumber, strawberries, lemon or any other fruit you like to make it more enjoyable.
  4. Choose Hydrating Foods: Eat water-rich foods like fruits (watermelon, cucumber) and vegetables (lettuce, celery).
  5. Avoid Alcohol and Caffeinated drinks: Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages can dehydrate you, so limit their consumption in hot weather.
  6. Wear Light-Colored Clothing: Light fabrics and loose-fitting clothes help regulate body temperature
  7. Use Sunscreen: To protect you from UV rays that can cause skin cancer.
  8. Wear a Wide-Brimmed Hat: Protect yourself from direct sun exposure.
  9. Take Cool Showers: Refreshing showers or applying cool water to your skin can help.
  10. Sleep in a Cool Room: This will help you sleep better by dropping your core temperature.

Remember, staying hydrated is essential for overall health, especially during scorching summer days!
